In very short, what diets tend to do is starve the body, which inevitably causes it to "eat itself" from the inside out. The problem with this is that the body eliminates both fat AND protein (lean muscle, which a body needs in order to burn fat.) That is the first reason why a person who loses weight from any diet will inevitably gain it back, plus more - because, the body is trying to make up for what it lost. And it does it at the very first chance it gets - when "will power" wears out, which is the second reason. "Will power" is no match for the brain's metabolic setpoint or "weight control center" of the brain, which regulates and KEEPS the body at the weight it thinks it is supposed to be at. This article is not to go into to so much of that detail about resetting the metabolic setpoint as this article is to show you one thing: How to prevent feeling deprived by something I call "cheating on purpose". I'm going to give the you the several simple guidelines / rules / steps to be aware of to make sure you do this right. Here they are: • Do it few and far between - Moderation - In other words, don't go crazy. Yes, you realize that while you are doing everything else that goes with how I teach you to lose weight, you know that your metabolism can handle a little something "special", it doesn't mean to abuse it. • Enjoy it thoroughly / Savor it completely - chew it slowly, savoring it, bite by bite. See how well you can hold it in your mouth. Remember that old Welches commercial with the little girl saying something like "let it roll around in your mouth" - the slogan was something like"Take the time to taste the Welches"? Can you notice the different flavors, textures, and tastes that you didn't notice were there before? • Chose something kind of special - Pick something that really intriques you. For you, it might be that one special thing your friend made you for your birthday, that you want to try a small piece of - go ahead. Meanwhile, unless the everyday, common Twinkie was your favorite, before, that's probably not the best choice. You get the idea. • Do it guilt free - Yes. This one's not as easy as it sounds. Do it without feeling bad. Do it while noticing that it's "something Chris is having you do..." A strange phenomena happens... Everybody says, when they do this right that they only have 1/3 of what they thought they wanted, and then they don't want anymore, that they feel satisifed. You probably already know that if you're not getting enough sleep, it compromises your immune system, so you might not stay as healthy or be able to ward off that cold going around your kid's school. Sleeplessness also causes a persons looks to suffer - dark around the eyes and such - and a general feeling of "dragging" due to low energy. What you may not realize is that lack of sleep also causes symptoms such as poor mental clarity, difficulty making decisions (or good ones, at least), and mood swings or unstable mood. It's simply frustrating. A person may not even realize that they are suffering from poor sleep. Very often, in the hypnosis center, we see people who are first coming for weight loss, and then realize, after the profound relaxed state they felt in the hypnosis, that they were actually under stress. Not all stress is bad. In fact, you need a certain amount of stress to grow your life. If you weren't under any stress to get anything done, for example, you'd just be a "lump on a log". But, failure to sleep well definitely causes stress, because, it is naturally a required state of the body - a downtime, a mental "break". Everybody needs sleep -and good sleep at that. Otherwise they can feel frustrated, unresourceful, and unable to deal well in creating their lives. You can easily recognize that most sleep problems often stem from excess worry. That is not to say that if there is a medical condition, such as fatty tissue at the back of the throat causing weight-related sleep apnea that you shouldn't lose weight and / or seek medical advice. Of course, you should. However, most of the time stress and worry are a major cause of sleeplessness, lack of emotional control, and weight gain. (Often, if you're overweight, you may have been eating when bored or in dealing with stress, so, food has become connected to your coping skills. If you had another way to deal with that, then you wouldn't need the weight problem.) Back to sleep... Your mind simply needs to learn to "shut off" or "shut down" for a while. You do need to realize that everybody needs some permission to "put the world away" for a while and realize that there is nothing for you to do at the moment but relax. This can be especially hard for individuals who are always helping others before helping themselves, or challenging for individuals who are hard on themselves or overanalytical. "Turing off" the mind is a choice. You literally need to realize that you must. And then learn how to do it. Practice it. How much help can you give people if you're like a dead battery - trying to charge other dead batteries. It doesn't work. What does work is to learn to give yourself permission to relax and recieve. This, among many other topics of sleep, is mainly what my new book "End Worry & Sleep Well" shows you how to do. Once you do this, you will be well on your way to getting restful nights of good deep sleep. And if there are other factors affecting your sleep, you should of course tend to them. But, for now, realize that your main goal needs to be, reducing worry from your life and gaining a general and genuine sense of faith that you can feel in your very autonomic nervous system - your very body. ...Enjoy! _______________________________________________ #2 - How to "Cheat On Purpose" for Genuine Weight Loss to Last Posted - 3/16/08 Fortunately, much of the country is realizing the concept that diets never work and they never will (Remington, Fisher, & Parent).
